How to use the Brokerage Calculator – Here’s a step-by-step guide you can place alongside the brokerage calculator on your blog:

  1. Select your trade type. Choose one of the four segments at the top:
    • Delivery — buying shares to hold beyond the trading day
    • Intraday — buying and selling within the same trading day
    • Futures — trading futures contracts
    • Options — trading options contracts
  2. Enter your buy price. Type the price per share (or per lot unit) at which you bought, or drag the slider.
  3. Enter your sell price. Type the price per share at which you sold (or plan to sell).
  4. Enter the quantity. Specify the number of shares or units traded.
  5. Read your Net Profit/Loss. This is shown at the top in green (profit) or black (loss) — it’s your actual take-home P&L after all charges are deducted.
  6. Check the summary row. This shows:
    • Turnover — total value of your buy + sell transactions
    • Total Charges — everything the exchange, broker, and government deduct
    • Gross P&L — your profit/loss before charges, for comparison
  7. Review the charge breakdown. This itemizes exactly where your money goes:
    • Brokerage — the broker’s fee
    • STT (Securities Transaction Tax) — a government tax on the trade
    • Exchange charges — fees charged by NSE/BSE
    • SEBI charges — regulatory fee
    • Stamp duty — state-level duty on the buy side
    • GST — 18% tax on brokerage and exchange charges
    • DP charges — depository charges (only applies to delivery sell trades)
  8. Check your breakeven price. This tells you the minimum sell price per share needed just to cover all charges — useful for deciding if a trade is even worth entering.
  9. Experiment with different trade types. Switch between Delivery, Intraday, Futures, and Options with the same buy/sell/quantity values to compare how charges differ dramatically by segment (Delivery has zero brokerage but DP charges; Intraday/F&O have brokerage but no DP charges, for example).
